Feature Set:  

BidPilot offers the basic estimating features which allow the accurate construction of an estimate. When beginning the program, the software enables you to set your default labor rates and markups, followed by default equipment rates and material costs. The software then allows you to set up your subcontract items and add-ons. One convenient feature in BidPilot is the ability to set up your crew database. This time-saving aspect gives you direct access to previous crew information for use in the future. At this point, project information can be entered and the estimation process begins. This program offers a few customization options, such as the addition, subtraction or modification of costs, line items, markups and unit measurements.

Although the program contains the basic features enabling you to accurately formulate an estimate, it is lacking in detailed reporting features and various customization options available in less-expensive software products.

Ease of Use:  

BidPilot is less intuitive than other estimating programs we evaluated. When initially navigating the BidPilot software, a basic background of estimating programs is very helpful. The absence of certain customization features diminishes the degree of ease with each software use. The part-time estimator, who is not continually using the program, tends to forget the previous experience between software uses. Customization options allow you to customize the program to your specific way of thinking. This aids in remembering the process with future use of the program. The addition of customization options would reduce difficulty in navigation of this software program.

Ease of Installation:  

The installation process of BidPilot is simple. We were able to install the software with no problems.

Help/Documentation:  

BidPilot offers both a question/answer and an index-sensitive help section. However, this help documentation was unable to answer some of our basic questions. Tech support must be contacted to answer any questions unanswered by the available help. The tech support was very helpful and eager to address any questions we had.

BidPilot seems to be a solid estimating program with all the basic features you need to create an accurate estimate. However, due to a difficult navigation process and a lack of customization options, part-time estimators may find this program frustrating.
